The Business Roundtable bring CEO's directly into government policymaking. Through the Roundtable, the CEOs' analyze economic and business issues, and present solutions to the government that the Roundtable believes will help the economy and prevent unwarranted government intrusions. The organization plays a powerful role in policymaking, as it represents $4.5 trillion in annual revenues, 10 million employees, one-third of the total value of US stock markets, and 40% of all corporate income taxes paid. The Financial Times called it "the most influential chief executive lobbying group in the U.S."

The Roundtable launches task forces in issues including corporate governance, energy, health care, and international trade and investment. The Roundtable was deemed the second most valuable venue for CEO's, after the World Economic Forum, by a Burson-Marsteller survey. The membership roster consists of a significant number of F500 companies. In 2007, the officers include Harold McGraw III (McGraw-Hill Companies), Edward Rust Jr. (State Farm Insurance Companies), and Kenneth Chenault (American Express Company). Task force chairmen include Anne Mulcahy (Xerox Corporation), Arthur Ryan (Prudential Financial, Inc.), Henry Silverman (Realogy Corporation), Charles Holliday Jr. (Dupont), Michael Morris (American Electrical Power Company, Inc.), Michael McAllister (Humana, Inc.), Jim Owens (Caterpillar Inc.) and Frederick Smith (FedEx Corporation).
